WILD RIVERS.NO CROWDS.

Foca sits where the Cehotina meets the Drina, in the far east of Bosnia and Herzegovina. Four rivers, a canyon second only to the Grand Canyon, and a national park with one of Europe's last primeval forests — all within an hour of town.

One town.
Four rivers.

PICK WHAT YOU CAME FOR

Most people arrive in Foca for one thing and leave having done three.

The Drina and the Cehotina run through town. The Tara comes down from Montenegro through the deepest canyon in Europe. An hour away, Sutjeska National Park holds Perucica — one of the last two primeval forests left on the continent — and Maglic, the highest peak in the country.

Fish it. Paddle it. Walk it.

Rivers we grew
up on.

Brown trout, grayling and — if the river is in the mood — huchen. We fish the Drina and the Cehotina almost daily, and take people to the Tara and the Sutjeska when they want something wilder. Two or three rods on the water, never more. Catch and release is the default.

RAFTING · WHITEWATER

The Tara Canyon drops 1,300 metres and runs for roughly 80 kilometres — the deepest in Europe and second in the world after the Grand Canyon. It is UNESCO protected. The rafting season runs from April to mid-October.

We do not run rafts and we do not own a camp. What we do is put you with the operator that fits your group, your date and the water level that day — then you deal with them directly, at their price.

HONEST ANSWERS

Where exactly is Foca?

Eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, in Republika Srpska, about 70 km south of Sarajevo. Sarajevo airport is the closest — roughly an hour and a half by road. Podgorica in Montenegro is around 150 km, Belgrade about 300 km.

Do you speak English?

Written English is no problem — send a message or an e-mail and you will get a clear answer. Spoken English is decent rather than fluent: enough to run a day on the water, agree on plans and have a conversation, with a translator app filling the gaps when something gets technical. Nobody has had trouble so far.

Do I need a fishing licence?

Yes. Sport fishing in Bosnia and Herzegovina requires a valid permit, issued locally. We sort this out with you before the trip — we do not put anyone on the water without one. Tell us your dates when you get in touch and we will explain the current cost and procedure.

What about accommodation?

There are guesthouses in town and camps along the rivers. We are not a hotel and we do not take a cut, but we know the places and will point you at something that fits — tell us your budget and how many of you there are.

Can I bring my own gear?

Please do, if you have it. If you would rather travel light, say so in your message and we will sort out rods, flies or lures and waders. Either works.

What is the best time of year?

Depends what you are after. Spring means high, cold, fast water — strong rafting, harder fishing. July and August are warmest and best for a first raft or a family. September is the quiet favourite: fewer people, pleasant water, autumn colour in the canyon.
